The San Siro Stadium was inaugurated on the 19th September 1926. Built as a gift to AC Milan by Piero Pirelli, the construction work took only around 13 months at a total cost of today's 2 million dollars. The stadium hosted four stands with a total capacity of 10,000 spectators.
In 1939, the stands were reconstructed to the perimeter structure as we know them today. Thus the capacity of the stadium was increased to 55,000 spectators. The famous ramps were constructed and the total capacity was envisaged to be 150,000. However, in March 1952, the Commune of Milan deliberated that no more than 100,000 spectators would be allowed to enter the stadium.
In 1989 the stadium was again restructured. Eleven towers were built and a third ring increased the capacity to just over 85,000 all seated spectators. A fibreglass roof was also constructed to allow the spectators to comfortably watch their favourite team even in rainy conditions.
