Zaccheroni confirmed the team that beat Vicenza last week with the inclusion of Boban instead of the suspended Ambrosini. The match started in a downpour of rain and with Sampdoria fans protesting against their president using placards. Milan first chance came when Albertini saw his shot saved by an attentive Ferron in the 2nd minute. Sampdoria starting coming at Milan and managed a couple of corners which were well cleared my our defence. In the 13th minute Boban gave a precise ball for Weah whose shot just missed the post. The match play was now being transferred to midfield with fast bursts of attack from both sides whenever possible. In the 22nd minute a Leonardo corner found Weah but the Liberian's header went out to the left of Ferron. In the 26th minute Ortega robbed a ball from Maldini and crossed to an oncoming Pecchia whose header was easily saved by Rossi.

In the 28th minute a Boban free kick went well over the bar. Bierhoff was then shown a yellow card for a foul on the ever present Ortega. Nava then badly fouled Albertini and was, in turn, shown the yellow card. The match was becoming a scrappy affair in midfield and the weather conditions were not helping either team settle down. In the 39th minute Rossi then punched clear a dangerous cross and from the clearance Weah somehow managed to find Bierhoff who was surrounded by defenders. The ball fell to Leonardo who shot into the right top corner for Milan's first goal.

A few minutes later Weah tried an impossible overhead kick from a Sala cross but failed to find the posts. In the 43rd minute a Franceschetti first timer went way to the left of Rossi. Then it was Bierhoff who missed the easiest of chances when he was sent clear by Albertini to see his shot miss the goal when alone in front of Ferron. He then even managed a repeat when Boban sent him clear again but this time Ferron saved well. Milan could have concluded the match were it not for Bierhoff's missed, easy opportunities.

Sampdoria came out of the dressing room wanting to make amends. An Ortega shot was well out in the 3rd minute. A few minites later a Boban cross created some problems for Ferron but the keeper saved well. A Balleri cross then created problems for Milan rearguard but the ball was missed by everyone in the area. Milan tried to create a couple of moves but somehow the last pass always went astray. Weah then was sent on his way by Boban, crossed to Bierhoff whose header was miraculously saved by Ferron, for another easy opportunity missed. Costacurat was then shown the yellow card for a foul on Ortega. He will therefore miss the match against Juventus on the 6th of January. From the free kick Pecchia shot over the bar. In the 13th minute Balleri crossed for Palmieri who headed into the net for Sampdoria's equaliser. Rossi then had to make a good save in Palmieri's feet when the player came in front of him. Sampdoria were now creating chances and Milan's defence was in difficulty. Leonardo tried to surprise Ferron from the distance in the 17th minute but Ferron saved well. Maldini launched the perfect through pass for Weah in the 18th minute but the Liberian's shot went wide by mere inches. The match was turning out to be a saga of missed opportunities for our team. In the 23rd minute Ortega shot over the bar after managing to find some space. In the 25th minute Albertini, who had received a bad knock in the first half, had to be substituted by N'Gotty. The Frenchman established himself in the midfield sector of the field. Then in the 27th minute N'Gotty ran half the pitch to cross perfectly for Bierhoff who headed into the net with Ferron left watching.

At last the German had scored. In the 33rd minute a Palmieri shot went way over the bar. Sampdoria inserted Donadoni for Leonardo. Milan needed experience in midfield and Donadoni had seen it all. Milan were not packed solid in midfield with only Bierhoff and Weah up front. The Liberian was often seen helping out in defence as well and Milan seemed determined to keep the score. In the 35th minute Bierhoff was fouled just outside the area. N'Gotty however found the wall. From the resultant manoever Bierhoff's shot was well saved by Ferron. In the 41st minute Maldini had to chase Palmieri and managed to stop him just before entering the area. He was shown the yellow card. From the free kick Ortega equalised with a well taken free kick beating Rossi on his left.  Bierhoff then had another opportunity when he was all alone after being served well by Boban. A minute later Boban was shown the red card for protesting with the referee after he was fouled in midfield. So Milan had to play with ten men again for the second consecutive Sunday.   In the 94th  minute Milan had a free kick for a foul on Weah from just outside the area. N'Gotty again found the wall. The match ended with a draw which should not satisy Milan at all especially after reviewing the missed opportunities the team managed to create.
