Son of ex-Milan captain Cesare Maldini, Paolo was obviously churned out of Milans youth teams. At the tender age of 16 years, the then manager Nils Liedholm, decided to give the player a chance in the Serie A match against Udinese. Maldini has always distinguished himself in the left defensive position but has also occupied central defensive roles in the absence of Franco Baresi. Maldinis debut with the national squad came about when aged only 19 on the 31st March, 1988 against Yugoslavia when Italy drew 1-1 in Belgrade. In his role, Paolo was one of the few defenders with an attacking capability, usually ending up being marked by the opposing midfielder. Paolo Maldini is now captain of Milan and also captains Italy. With the national side Paolo is the third ranked most capped player having the possibility to reach even higher ranking. He is also one of the top Milan players regarding the number of trophys won. Paolo Maldini is now Milans most symbolic player in the squad after the retirement of Franco Baresi.
