Match Report Zaccheroni opted for the fastest team available leaving out Bierhoff and trying out a new tandem of Shevchenko and Weah in front. Giunti was preferred to Leonardo in midfield whilst Serginho was chosen on the left side of the midfield with Guglielminpietro on the right. Milan effectively had lined up in a 3-5-2 line up. Lazio immediately came out at Milan trying to launch Boksic by going over Milan's defensive three. Abbiati managed to dive into the Croat's legs to avert the danger. It was however Ambrosini who was the first to try a shot at goal missing by only a metre with a right footed shot from outside the area. Minutes later a Giunti scorcher just missed the post with Marcheggiani beaten. In the 18th minute Ayala failed to clear an innocuous ball, and Veron promptly shot Lazio into an unmerited lead. It was again Veron who then rattled the crossbar after a good run. Albertini tried his luck from afar but the ball went well wide. Marcheggiani made a superb save off Shevchenko who had beaten Nesta on the run. Milan were pplaying well. A good run on the left by Serginho ended with a cross were Weah was on hand to tap the ball home. A Boksic scorcher immediately afterwards saw Abbiati make a fantastic save. From the corner Simeone scored with a header from a Mihajlovic well taken kick straight into the first corner of the post. In another attack Lazio scored again. Concenciao found Salas unmarked in the area and the Chilean headed home. At this point Milan looked in crisis. Zaccheroni was seen and heard asking Ambrosini where he was going. Milan's defence was being streched to the full with long range passes to Boksic and Salas, thereby overriding Milan's compact midfield. In the 44th minute Guly found Shevchenko who dribbled past Marcheggiani and fired an incredible shot into the top of the net. The game was way from over. The second half started with a Concenciao shot which went over the bar. Albertini robbed Almeyda of the ball and he fouled the Italian national and was shown the yellow card. The resultant free kick went well over the bar. Another Salas header saw Abbiati make another great savein the 8th minute. Ambrosini found Weah in the area and the referee pointed to the spot as Marcheggiani fouled Weah. Shevchenko duly converted sending the keeper the wrong way. The match increased in intensity. Eriksson replaced Boksic with Mancini and Zaccheroni replied with Leonardo instead of Giunti. Shevchenko was showqn the yellow card for falling in the area when surrounded by at least four defenders. Costacurta was then shown yellow for fouling Veron just outside the area. From the freekick Mihajlovic shot over the bar. Shevchenko then invented another goal. Leonardo found him in the area. He controlled the ball and left footed into the corner of the net for his first hatrick at Milan. Abbiati then made another incredible save on the line with Lazio protesting. Veron then again found Salas unmarked in the area and the Chilean equalised with an easy shot. Veron should have been shown the red card when he kicked Serginho when on the floor. Zaccheroni substituted the Brasilian with N'Gotty a minute later. Milan changed to a four man defence. Both teams were beginning to look tired. Abbiati made another good save off a Mancini shot from a brilliant Veron pass. Veron tried his luck from far away but Abbiati was again ready. Maldini was then in the area one on one against Concenciao. Maldini was felled to the floor but no penalty was given his time. Shevchenko was taken off and replaced by Gattuso. Lazio continued to collect corners and their 9th was particularly dangerous. The ball however cleared to corner by Gattuso. Concenciao then ventured into the area and colected corner number 11. Abbiati made a superb save off a Salas header. The last save was by Abbiati who punched to corner a Mihajlovic scorcher direct from a corner. The referee whistled the end of the match at this point. A truly magnificent game of football.
