Match Report

With Costacurta injured, Zaccheroni decided to replay Sala from the start risking criticism after the players' mistake cost Milan all three points against Hertha Berlin. The match started with a great chance for Weah who one on one against Peruzzi just passed the ball to the Inter keeper. The match warmed up and Inter, especially through Ronaldo, were more dangerous. A number of yellow cards were dsitrbuted by the referee as the game became increasingly hostile.

Inter took the lead when Sala downed Ronaldo in the area to give away a penalty. The Brasilian took the kick and sent Abbiati the wrong way. A few minutes later Ronaldo, who had already had a heated exchange of views with Ayala, was seen elbowing Ayala. The referee was quite unsure of the facts and it was up to the linesman who had clearly seen the incident. Ronaldo was shown the red card. Lippi promptly inserted Domoraud instead of Moriero and Zaccheroni inserted Albertini instead of an increasingly nervous Ambrosini.

The second half was dominated by Milan, who were patiently tiring out Inter by attacking on their flanks. However, Milan's forwards were having an off day. Weah missed an incredible opportunity when in front of Peruzzi, again, and actually had the chance to hit the rebound in as well, but failed again. Inter relied heavily on counterattacks were they managed to create some danger.

The turning point of the match was in the 68th minute wehn Zaccheroni decided it ws time to take off the slow and cumbersome Bierhoff and insert Shevchenko. The Ukranian created havon from the minute he entered the pitch and in the 73rd minute equalised. Shevchenko hit the corssbar with a superbly taken header, Sala ran in for the rebound with Weah, Domoraud and Blanc. The ball somehow hit all three players and  hit Shevchenko on the shin with the ball going into the empty net.

Boban was now dominating the midfield surgically incising Inter's defense. Even Serginho took a new lease of life but the ball just would not enter. In the 90th minute Milan had a corner. Boban took the kick and Weah soared above all to blast the net with a powerful header. The Inter "home" crowd was silenced and the last three remaining minutes were a formality. Milan have beaten Inter after waiitng 5 long years for a win in the serie A.
