Milan made a giant leap forward for a place in next years Champions League by beating Verona 2-1 at the Bentegodi in an incredible nail biting affair. To sum it all up, Verona took the lead through an incredible goal, Milan then hit the post, and then missed a penalty. A game more emotional than that !!!

Ancelotti fielded Abbiati in goal, then a back four consisting of Maldini, a welcome return, Chamot, Laursen and Kaladze. In midfield Serginho, Pirlo, Ambrosini and Gattuso with Shevchenko and an indomitable Inzaghi up front.

Milan did not start the game well. The team was slow and predictable with few chances being created. However the first chance fell to Milan on the 6 th min from an Inzaghi shot which saw Ferron make a superb save to corner. On the 14th min Laursen lost the ball just outside his area but Serginho recovered to save the day for a Milan which was not looking good at all. Laursen made amends a few minutes later when he intercepted a cross from a free run on the right. On the 28th minute mark came Verona's goal. Mutu ran from half pitch, dummied Kaladze and shot an incredible missile into the corner of the net.

Milan here decided to wake up and fight. From now on the team created some good chances with the first falling to Shevchenko who missed badly froma good position. On the 43rd minute Pirlo hit a magical free kick and hit the post. the rebound fell to Inzaghi who shot a goal was again miracoulasly saved by Ferron. A minute later Inzaghi tried again but again Ferron punched to corner. milan had created a lot of good chances but failed to score.

The second half started with a good Milan move after four minutes with kaladze being fouled in the area. Serginho took the kick, hit the left post with the ball crossing all the goal post and ending up at the other end. At this point Milan fans were resurrecting memories of the famous Fatal-Verona !!! Ancelotti spurred his team on, comanding the proceedings and making a number of interesting substitutions which produced the desired results.

On the 14th minute an Italiano shot was somehow deflected to corner by Kaladze. Moments later Inzaghi beat the keeper but Dailello cleared off the line much to the Milan's fans disappointment. On the 2oth minute mark Milan finally scored. A perfect Kaladze pass found Inzaghi who controlled and shot into the corner of the net from just outside the area. Verona reacted and a Colucci header went just over the bar. Milan continued to press forward and in the 36th minute managed to forge ahead. An incredible pinball in the area with everyone trying to get the ball. Finally the ball fell to Kaladze who found Pirlo with an inch perfect pass. Pirlo went past the keeper and scored into an empty net. kaladze was today's assist men with two assists.

Possession was 27:03 to 21:06 for Milan. Inzaghi was voted Man of the Match by the press for his superb performance.

23/4/2002 Tomasson

According to Italian press, Milan have signed Danish Feyenoord striker Jon Dahl Tomasson on a free transfer. The twenty five year old will be replacing Javi Moreno who will be returning to Spain next summer.

Other transfer talk

Other players being mentioned for Milan's restructuring are Josip Guardiola, also on a free transfer from Brescia, Jap Stam, Milan have offered 25 million euros for the Lazio defender and Chievo's Legrottaglie.

21/4/2002 Hope still alive.

MILAN: Abbiati, Roque Junior (dal 66' Sarr), Laursen, Chamot, Kaladze, Gattuso (dal 88' st Brocchi), Ambrosini, Serginho, Pirlo, Inzaghi, Shevchenko (dal 79' Kutuzov)

ROMA: Antonioli, Panucci, Samuel, Zago (dal 29' Aldair), Cafu, Tommasi, Emerson, Candela, Totti (dal 72' Cassano), Montella, Delvecchio (dal 83' Fuser)

Referee: Paparesta

Yellow cards: Candela (R), Emerson (R)

With all the injuries Ancelotti managed to field a team with Abbiati in goal, Roque Junior and Kaladze on the flanks and with Laursen and Chamot as central defenders. Gattuso and Ambrosini held ground in midfield with Serginho on the left flank. Pirlo was the midfield inspirator with Shevchenko and Inzaghi in charge of the attack.

Milan started well. After only two minutes Inzaghi dribbled his way into the area and managed to shoot at goal but Antonioli somehow saved. Roma responded with a Montella shot which went out. Another chance fell to Inzaghi but his header was just anticipated by Antonioli.

Montella created some magic in the box sending the ball over Roque Junior but his shot went over. Abbiati saved well by coming out of his area a few times and clearing well leaving little space for the Roma strikers to run. With the news that Chievo were in the lead a heartened Roma had two last chances but Laursen and Pirlo cleared on both occasions.

The second half saw Milan still in control. Inzaghi had a half chance early on but failed to connect with a header from a good position in front of goal. Then it was a Totti incredible long range shot but Abbiati saved to corner. From the corner a Samuel header was saved again by Abbiati. In the ninth minute a Totti free kick from a dangerous position found the wall. From the counterattack Shevchenko had the chance but he failed to dribble past the last Roma defender.

Two minutes later Roma had their best chance of the match. Montella ran free crossed for the onrushing Cafu alone in front of goal but the Brazilian failed to score. At about the same team Chievo had conceeded the second goal and were now losing. With Lazio winning and Bologna losing, Milan had to win to keep their Champions league hopes alive. On the 19th minute a Serginho cross shot saw Antonioli having to make a save. On the 25th minute Gattuso went down injured. Sarr made his Serie A debut instead of Roque Junior and Gattuso re-entered the field. On the 33rd minute another youngster Kutuzov, came in for a tired Shevchenko. The game slowed down visibly with chances now becoming a rarity. Serginho made a good run down the left but his cross was saved by Antonioli just pipping Inzaghi for the ball.

Brocchi came in for Gattuso three minutes from time with a standing ovation by the fans. Two minutes from time Candela found the corner from a free kick but Abbiati made a superb save. At this point Chievo equalised and Juventus scored to take the lead. Inzaghi had a good opportunity but failed to score when in front of Antonioli. In teh 46th minute Montella went through at least three defenders with some luck but his shot went just over the bar. Roma were now another team and caught Milan again on a swift counter attack but Milan cleared to corner. Not much more happened after this Roma final assault.

Gattuso was voted Man of the match.

18/4/2002 Latest on transfers

The latest news coming out of the newspapers about Milan's shopping list is Anderson Polga. The Brasilian defender is wanted by Milan and Roma with the transfer fee in the region of 15 million Euro's. Another incredible transfer rumour is that Milan will sign Beppe Signori from Bologna. The club is looking around for experienced players as backups, since this seemed to have been the flaw this year with so many injuries.

15/4/2002 Albertini to miss world cup

Demetrio Albertini's injury yesterday in the match against Juventus is more serious than predicted. It will take two to three months for his achilles tendon to heal properly and the player will therefore miss the world cup. Italian manager Trapattoni has called Stefano Fiore of Lazio in his place.

Milan to play in St Petersburg

After the tournee in the USA where the team will be playing Celtic in aid of the victim's families of the September 11 attacks, Milan have fixed a friendly match against Zenit on the 27th May at 18:00 hrs. The city has chosen Milan to kick off the celebrations for the 300 years of the city.

14/4/2002 Four injured, one own goal

mm-------

-----11---- - ----- 0-

78' Chamot o.g.

How unlucky can a team get. Four injured players taken off the pitch with the only goal coming from an own goal, when already down to ten men in the second half. Unfortunatley, this has been Milan's season this year. In the space of a few minutes Milan lost Contra, Serginho, Helveg and Albertini all through injury.

Milan played well, as well as could be expected after Thursday's fatigue filled match against Borussia Dortmund. The rossoneri even had the best chances since Juventus found it difficult to get past an inspired Gattuso, Ambrosini wall in midfield and had to resort to long balls to overcome the duo, resulting in easy clearances for the back two Chamot, Laursen.

Ancelotti fielded Abbiati, with Helveg and Kaladze on his flanks and Laursen and Chamot in the centre. Contra and Serginho played on the wings with Ambrosini and Gattuso in the centre of midfield. Up front Inzaghi and Shevchenko.

Milan's best opportunities fell to Inzaghi who's shots went close but not close enough. Shevchenko, who is still trying to find his form struggled but was positive in keeping the ball and in distributing it, playing mainly for the team.

The goal came with twelve minutes to go. Milan, already in ten men, gave away a free kick. The cross hit Chamot, in his attempt to clear, sending the ball over Abbiati for an incredible own goal. Ancelotti moved Laursen forward in a last ditch attempt to equalise and Milan got caught nearly conceding another goal but Abbiati made a super save.

Apart from this not much can be said. The injury situation reads as follows: Serginho - Knee distortion, Contra - Knee distortion, Helveg - Muscular problem, Albertini - Achilles tendon.

With Bologna losing and with Chievo and Lazio winning the Champions league situation is now more complicated than ever. One last comment. Ambrosini was voted man of the match.

13/4/2002 Transfer talk

News is that Milan have pulled out of the Cannavaro transfer. The news is unconfirmed but Milan are in talks with Fluminense for right full-back Paolo Cesar, widely regarded, as a Cafu clone. This news means that probably Contra will probably leave, maybe for Bayern Munich. This could lead to Kuffour, hence Milan's retreat for Cannavaro. Then there is the Thuram option. Milan are in talks with Juventus for the defender. Rumour has it that all is revolving on whether Nesta moves or not. If Nesta moves, the probability is that the top defenders will also move.

11/4/2002 Milan pride

-----13---- ------ 1-

10' Inzaghi, 18' Contra, 90' Serginho rig, 94' Ricken

Milan: Abbiati; Helveg, Laursen, Chamot, Kaladze; Contra (62' Jose' Mari), Gattuso, Serginho; Pirlo; Inzaghi, Shevchenko (67' Simone). All. Ancelotti.

Borussia: Lehmann; Reuter, Worns, Metzelder, Dede; Oliseh, Rosicky, Heinrich (57' Evanilson); Ewerthon (72' Ricken), Koller, Amoroso. All. Sammer.

Referee: Veissiere (France)

Yellow cards: Gattuso, Inzaghi, Contra, Dede, Laursen, Metzelder

Milan's pride was on show at the San Siro tonight and the fans applauded the players off the field at the end of the match. The game was a great reconciliation between the fans and the team. With 5 minutes of injury time left Milan were 3-0 up and a goal close from recovering the 4-0 deficit, suffered at Dortmund.

Milan came out strong and after 10 minutes went ahead. Shevchenko found Serginho on the left, ran a few metres and crossed beautifully onto Inzaghi's head who did not miss the opportunity. Milan's dream start continued when after 19 minutes a Pirlo free kick was punched clear with the ball falling to Contra who's shot found the back of the net. Milan and the fans were illuded that they could recover the result and surged ever more forward to equalise the gap.

Milan continued to attack and a Kaladze shot was seen passing through Lehmann's legs only to finish in corner.

The second half saw more of the same. Inzaghi had a clear chance but Pirlo had even a better one but lehmann saved from point blank range. Milan' last chance came when Inzaghi was presumably fouled in the area (personally I think there were clearer fouls on him during the match) and a penalty was given. Serginho took the kick and scored. Milan tried one last desperate effort but with all men forward it was Borussia who scored from a counter attack through Ricken.

A good display by Milan who were appluaded off the field by the fans.

9/4/2002 Injury situation

Both Paolo Maldini and Rui Costa underwent tests today to see the entity of their injuries. Rui Costa's injury is, as was expected, much more serious with a tear 5cm long beneath his previous injury. Another serious of tests are expected next week. Paolo Maldini's injury is less serious with another control envisaged in two days time. The player should skip Borussia and be ready for the match against Juventus next Sunday.

Chamot to return to Atletico

Jose Antonio Chamot will be returning to Atletico Madrid next season. Milan are expected to make a strong financial contribution in defence and the Argentine will lose his stronghold in the side. Milan are in talks with top defenders and are expected to sign at least two top class defenders, and also Gamarra.

MILAN (4-4-1-1): Abbiati; Chamot, Laursen, Roque Junior, Kaladze; Brocchi (30’ st Josè Mari), Albertini (41’ st Pirlo), Gattuso, Serginho; Rui Costa (15’ Shevchenko); Inzaghi. Subs: Rossi, Helveg, Ambrosini, Donati.

Manager: Ancelotti.

Referee: De Santis
Yellow cards: D’Angelo (C), Laursen (M), Moro (C), Eriberto (C), Serginho (M), Gattuso (M), Corini (C)
Red cards: Moro

Ancelotti again had to reinvent the team due to Maldini and Costacurta's injuries. In defence the back four read Chamot, Kaladze and with Laursen and Roque Junior in the centre. In midfield Gattuso, Serginho, Albertini and Brocchi with Rui Costa and Inzaghi up front with Rui Costa slightly backwards towards midfield.

The first chance fell to Corradi whose flying header went over the top. In the 13th minute Inzaghi headed into goal from a perfect Rui Costa cross onto the near post. The header was typical of Inzaghi with him running into the ball. Minutes later, however, all wa lost with yet another dfensive blunder. Inzaghi was brought down in the area blatantly by lanna but the referee did not see the puch. Then Albertini forgot Moro in the area for a free header into the net from a set piece move for Chievo's equaliser.

Rui Costa tried his luck with a direct free kick but Lupatelli saved well to corner. A short time later Corini was left unmarked and ran about 30 metres before shooting well over the bar from a good position.

The second half saw Chievo get the first chance but Mazzazini misses to control well from a Franceschini cross. Rui Costa went down injured with yet another muscle injury. Seems that it's a groin injury. Fortunately, the substitute's name was Shevchenko !!! Sheva took some time to settle down but when he did he showed that he is back with good runs and dribbles. Moro was shown the red card for his second bookable ofence and it was time for Milan to move forward with more determination.

A Franceschini shot went over the bar direct from a free kick. Shevchenko tried his luck from long range but Lupatelli saved well. A Lanna cross saw Corradi go down in the area but the referee waved play on.

A Perotta long range effort saw Abbiati save well. In the last minute of injury time a Pirlo magical assist found Inzaghi but his effort went over the bar.

4/4/2002 Bad day

mm-------

-----14---- ------ 0-

8', 33', 39' Amoroso, 62' Heinrich

Borussia: Lehmann, Reuter, Woerns, Metzelder, Dede (77' Kohler), Oliseh, Rosicky, Heinrich (70' Evanilson), Koller, Amoroso, Ewerthon (89' Reina).

Manager: Sammer

Milan: Abbiati, Contra (64' Roque Junior), Laursen, Maldini, Kaladze, Gattuso (60' Rui Costa), Albertini (46' Serginho), Ambrosini, Pirlo, Inzaghi, Jose' Mari.

Manager: Ancelotti

Referee: Graham Poll (Eng)
Yellow cards: Ambrosini, Gattuso, Rui Costa, Jose' Mari

A lacklustre display by Milan and a number of mistakes in dfence, especially by Contra, led to a humiliating defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. To start from the end, however, the stats showed that Milan had 15 shots on goal against Borussia's 11 !!! However, the result was a resounding 4-0 trashing.

Amoroso started the damage when he scored a very dubious penalty. This set the pace with Milan determined to equalise but this gave more open space to the same Amoroso who scored number two and number three.

The second came from slack marking at the back with Amoroso toying around with Laursen and easily beating Abbiati whi could do nothing.

The third came from a header, again by Amoroso who managed to get his hat trick for the night. Again it was Ewerthon who did the damage with a perfect cross for Amoroso.

Second half was slightly better for us since we managed to concede only one goal. It was from another ewerthon cross which Heinrich managed to shoot into the net from one metre.

A mediocre Milan which has to do a lot better if the team intends playing in the Champiosn league next year.

2/4/2002 Rui Costa to make the trip

Rui Costa will be making the trip to Dortmund. The player has recovered from the injury. Shevchenko will on the other hand remain at milanello to complete his recovery. Chamot is also doubtful.

Milan option Max Lopez

Milan have taken an option on Massimiliano Lopez of River Plate. the player is especially strong with his head.
